Next Stop: Sedona, Arizona

imga0317The drive form Flagstaff to Sedona was incredible. Once you drop off the plateau the landscape immediately morphs from aspens and mountains to big red cliffs eaten away by years of erosion and speckled with green plants and cacti. Once you drive out of the canyon it turns into a rocky desert spotted with all different colors and shades of rock; the city of Sedona itself is actually sandwiched between amazing red rock and limestone cliffs.  It is very beautiful there, not to mention very hot.

img_3117The riding in Sedona was super diverse and this was the first opportunity of my illustrious career to ride slick rock. To kick the day off Chewy, our local Sedonian guide, hit a sick little rock roll to show me how it was done; I quickly discovered that it was quite fun because it was so grippy. The trail we rode was cool because, like Baskin Robbins 32 flavours of ice cream, the Sedona terrain served up a ton of different options; from cliff edges to rocky downhill sections and even a cool eroded wash that created, what was akin to, a natural slick rock half pipe. Chewy turned out to be quite the shredder as well; he ripped the trails like a true local who had each turn dialled.

img_3139We also got to experience a little bit of the quirky Sedona culture. Two things that really stuck out were the UFO shop and sitting in the Barbie jeep. The UFO shop was awesome! True believers live here. There is supposedly a lot of “vortex energy” in Sedona which accounts, at least in part, for all the localized alien activity. As the story goes, there is so much alien activity that we could have taken a “$100” tour where you go out after dark with night vision goggles and are guaranteed to see a alien ship….I’ll keep my 100 bucks thanks, but the Barbie Jeep was very cool.

The pink Barbie Jeep belongs to one of the jeep tour outfits in Sedona. Darcy and I got to sit in their display Jeep while eating ice cream and listing to a guy with a guitar sing about dragons, wizards and whatnot. Sedona was cool! Next up was the true vast expanse of overheated desert in Scottsdale, can’t wait.

img_3122Oh yeah one last thing. There was this musician singing at the restaurant where we were staying and he let this family come up and do barber shop type harmony which was…. marginal at best.  But a drunken old lady doing a really silly dance to the marginal barber shop harmony kind made up for it. Not that I would laugh at situation like this, but Darcy, Cory and I did have to work pretty hard to containing ourselves.

Till next time,

-Dylan
